How to care for Nichols and Stone Furniture

Nichols and Stone recommend the periodic use of furniture polish or wax for additional protection. Always select a non-silicone based polish or wax and always polish with the grain of the wood. Should a buildup of polish or wax occur, it can be removed by gently rubbing the affected surface with mineral spirits using either  steel wool or a cloth. A cloth dampened with mineral spirits should be used to remove all residue from the surface. Remember, rub with the grain of the wood.

While Nichols and Stone’s table tops are finished with STONESHIELD II, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that they are solid wood, and when a hot dish or a cup of hot liquid is placed directly on the surface, moisture may be drawn from the wood and be trapped under the topcoat, causing a ring or discoloration to form. This does not mean the table or the finish is defective; rather, it is indicative of the fact that care must be exercised in the use of solid wood furniture.

Hardwoods exchange moisture with the air, adjusting to major changes in temperature and humidity. In furniture, solid hardwoods respond to extremely dry air by losing moisture and shrinking a bit. Tabletop halves may part slightly without affecting the table's strength and sturdiness. They will close again under more humid conditions. For this reason, never place solid wood furniture directly over the air vents in a room. Constant exposure to the heating and cooling may dry out the wood and damage joints.

Sunlight is not a friend to solid wood furniture and prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight can discolor the finish. The lighter the finish, the more discoloring can occur so be careful not to place furniture in the direct sunlight for extended periods.

Move accessories around periodically so they don't mask the natural sunlight and leave a lighter shadow when moved after a lengthy stay. Remember, solid wood furniture ages beautifully as exposure to light and natural oils affect its color and patina.

With minimum care and attention, Nichols & Stone furniture will last many years. Don't be surprised if it becomes a cherished heirloom to be handed down generation to generation. People still possess original pieces made over 150 years ago and proudly guard their heirloom.
